WHAT IS RAMIE?

Made from the flowering stalks of the Chinese nettle plant, ramie has been used in fabric production for more than 6,000 years. One of the strongest natural fibers – six times as strong as cotton – it is light, lustrous, and naturally breathable, giving it growing appeal in the fashion and interior design industries as a sustainable alternative to synthetics.

Eco-friendly ramie requires no pesticides or herbicides to grow and is naturally resistant to mold, mildew, and bacteria. It’s harvested several times a year when the plant begins to flower – a sign it’s reached maximum fiber content. The long stems are cut and the cortex is separated from the plant then scraped of remaining bark. The residual material is washed and dried and adhesive resins are removed to extract the spinnable fiber.

The result? A refined, durable textile that figures prominently in many Hartmann&Forbes collections.
